Get ready. Go!

Writing is a process; science is a process; health is a process. Disorder in doing any of the above does not change these facts. In fact, one may switch back and forth between stages, and that is expected. Because the writing process mirrors the basic scientific method, both are outlined below. Above all, one must remain always objective and observant. Subjective inattention has no place here. Sir William Osler, one of the greatest educators in history, summed up the writing-research process like this: 'Observe, Record, Tabulate, Communicate.' Though very simplified, this is the core basis of writing and the scientific method precesses. The following is a somewhat more descriptive version.

1. Observe: One makes an observation about some event, set of events, or feature. One may do some brainstorming, journaling, and some preliminary reading on a more general subject before moving forward.

2. Question: Form a question from observation and preliminary reading.

3. Hypothesise: Narrow it to a specific, controversial, and arguable topic about which further investigation to provide evidence for some relationship or causality is possible. Form a hypothesis (thesis statement).
